Stranger Tries to Lure Children into Car

Sedgwick Middle School in West Hartford, was closely watched by police last Friday, after two students say a man tried to convince them to get in his car. The alleged incident happened on Oct. 1 at 3:15 p.m. on Cornerstone Drive, near the Buena Vista Gardens.

In a letter sent home, principal Benjamin Skaught notified parents about the alleged incident. He said that the children were able to get away and quickly tell their parents, who then called the police. The police then alerted the school.

People in West Hartford were frightened to learn about the attack.

"That is very surprising, in West Hartford," Jennifer Smith said. "Yes, that's very surprising, I wouldn't expect that at all."

The two students described the man as between 30 and 40 years old with brown hair. They say he was driving a beige four door, that was possibly a Buick with a large antenna. Police have not been able to find anyone matching that description or a vehicle.

Principal Skaught told parents to remind their children about "the three R's;" run, remember, and report.

Parents we talked to said there are lessons that children need to be taught when put in uncomfortable situations.

Amy Furstein, who lives in West Hartford advised, "never get in a car with somebody. Make sure they know who they're talking to and be aware."
