Tribe Seeking Volunteers for Job Buyouts

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation is reopening a voluntary buyout program for tribal government employees that could lead to some layoffs.

A spokeswoman for the tribe said they must cut back staff and letters have gone out to employees.

The tribe owns the Foxwoods Resort Casino and MGM Grand at Foxwoods.

In May about 170 workers left the tribe's payroll under a similar voluntary buyout program. Ten percent were laid off and the rest opted for a buyout package.

At that time, the buyout option included six months of compensation and benefits and one week's salary per year worked up to 10 years. This year, two rounds of layoffs at Foxwoods included about 100 employees, mainly managers, in June and another 700 in October at both Foxwoods and MGM Grand.
