Drowning Victim's Mother: “Kept in the Dark”

The East Hartford mom whose son died in the school pool is looking for answers.

For the first time, the mother of a teenager who drowned at East Hartford High School sat down with NBC Connecticut for a one-on-one interview.

"I cry myself to sleep sometimes. I sit down and I go into his room and it's empty," Doris Anponsah said.

She has been adjusting to living alone, ever since her son died three weeks ago.

“I love him, I miss him so much," Anponsah said.

This mother still remembers the morning of Jan. 11, when Marcum Asiamah left for East Hartford High School.

“In just this living room I said goodbye to my son.  I said, 'I love you Marcum, I’ll see you later' and he said, 'I love you too,'" Anponsah said.

This parent never imagined that would be their last time together.

Marcum, a 15-year-old freshman, died after falling to the bottom of the swimming pool that afternoon during gym class.

“I just want to know what happened so I can have closure. I cannot understand what happened to my son,” Anponsah said.

Marcum didn’t know how to swim, his mother said, and she wants to know how he was being supervised and what led to this. She said she’s demanded answers, but no one’s saying anything.

“Oh boy, it makes me so angry,” she said.

The school district and police have not said anything about what happened at the pool that day, only that they are still investigating and it could take a few more weeks to get answers.

Marcum’s mother said she might sue the city of East Hartford over her son’s drowning, but would not comment any further.

For now, she will stay focused on finding out the circumstances behind Marcum’s death so she can start to heal.
