East Granby Teacher Killed

Crete Kochanek died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Grief counselors will be at East Granby School District on Monday as students and staff mourn the death of a choral teacher.

Crete Kochanek died last week from carbon monoxide poisoning in Massachusetts.

She taught at R.D. Seymour School and the middle and high schools in East Granby for 10 and a half years and had moved to Westfield, Massachusetts.

Kochanke's husband, Stanley, also suffered carbon monoxide poisoning, but is recovering in the hospital.

"This is a very sad day for East Granby because Mrs. Kochanek has touched the lives of so many of our students and their families over the years, and she will be greatly missed,” Supt. Christine Mahoney wrote in a memo posted on the school district's web site

While students at R.D. Seymour School and the town's middle and high schools have been told of Kochanek's death, Mahoney said the school district did not tell students who attend Carl Allgrove School, an elementary school, because of their age.

Mahoney said parents would be responsible for telling their children about the teacher.

The district is providing counseling for both students and staff. Counselors were ready to meet with people on Friday and will be ready to help again on Monday.

Stanley Kochanek  has been a member of the Manufacturing Technology Center staff at Asnuntuck Community College since 2008.  He teaches Metallurgy, Metrology, Math and has taught many other courses during his tenure at Asnuntuck, school offcials said.

Stan is expected to make a full recovery, according to school officials.
