Gas Leak Causing Lane Closures on Route 44 in Avon, Buildings Evacuated

There are lane closures on Route 44 in Avon because of a gas leak and buildings in the area have been evacuated, according to police.

Avon fire marshal James Dipace said a contractor replacing a water main hit a supply for one of the buildings around 1 p.m. and broke it.

Crews have not been able to repair it at the site of the leak, so they have to repair it at the gas main and shut it off, Dipace said.

Avon Police said Route 44 was closed between 300 West Main St. and West Avon Road, which is Route 167. As of 4:35 p.m., one lane of traffic was open in each direction. Drivers should still expect delays in the area.

No one has been injured.
