Glastonbury Resident Stuck In Egypt As Tensions Grow

As tensions continue to grow in Egypt, the United States has issued a travel warning for all Americans, but for one college student from Glastonbury, the problem is not going to Egypt, it getting out.

About a week ago, Matthew Wilchek, a junior at George Mason University who is studying global affairs, arrived in Cairo to begin a semester abroad.

Days later, protestors took to the streets in Egypt’s capital city in a show of defiance to the government. It was a planned demonstration and intended to be peaceful. It actually peaked Matthew’s interest.

Now Matthew’s family is wishing he got on a plane to get home sooner.

"He was excited to be there. We opened the door and said, 'You want come home?' and he said no, I think it’s a good opportunity," his mother Donna Wilcheck, of Glastonbury, said.

Luckily, Matthew was able to travel to his university’s campus about an hour outside of Cairo, but now he cannot get to the airport.

Internet and cell phone usage is scarce, so Matthew is depending on his family in Glastonbury to help him get home.

"I’m just trying to get some answers so that I can tell my son how he can safely travel from the university to the airport," Donna Wilcheck said.

The university is working with the United States Embassy in Cairo to arrange transportation for American students.
