Man Found Guilty of Killing 90-Year-Old Father

A Connecticut man,  who testified in court that he consumed crack, powder cocaine and Percocet pills before killing and dismembering his 90-year-old father, was found guilty of murder Friday.

Jan Gawlik, of New Britain, was found guilty of murder in the death of his father, Joseph at New Britain Superior Court on Friday. He also faces a third-degree assault on the elderly charge in connection to a reported attack on his 74-year-old mother in October 2011.

West Haven Police have arrested a man suspected of stealing expensive seafood and steaks and said he might also be wanted in several other towns.

The New Britain Herald reports that Alec Buchanan, a former associate professor at the Yale School of Medicine, said in New Britain Superior Court it wasn't drugs but a "psychotic illness" that drove Gawlik. He interviewed Gawlik and others.

Buchanan testified last Monday that Gawlik told him he used an ornamental sword and a kitchen knife to stab his father while hearing voices to "dismember" him.

Gawlik's public defender Michael Isko said he was seeking an "extreme emotional disturbance" defense.

Gawlik also has two separate pending cases in New Britain, one for an attempt to commit violation of protection order charge and the other for a third-degree illegal possession of child pornography charge, according to the state judicial website.

He's due to return to court for sentencing on Jan. 9, 2015 for the murder case and on the same date for the other charges.
