Meeting Tonight on Wallingford Postal Center

The meeting will be at Villa Capri, 906 North Colony Road.

The U.S. Postal Service has proposed closing the mail processing and distribution center in Wallingford as part of the postal service's efforts to slash costs and a meeting on the plan will be held on Wednesday night.

The Postal Service needs to cut operating costs by 2015 and part of the plan to do this includes moving the mail processing operations from the Southern Connecticut Processing and Distribution Center in Wallingford to the Hartford Processing and Distribution Center and handling flat and parcel volume in Springfield, Massachusetts.

However, the public’s input will be considered prior to a final decision, according to the U.S. Postal Service.

The postal service study said consolidating would save about $23 million a year.

About 700 people work at the center, which services all of southern Connecticut, and the feasibility study calls for cutting 281 positions.

The impact for residents is that it could take longer to get your packages from the U.S. Postal Service.

A public hearing will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Villa Capri, 906 North Colony Road, Wallingford. The presentation is posted online.
