Police Investigate Break-ins in North Branford

Police said the Northford section of town, along Village Street, is being targeted.

North Branford Detectives are investigating a rash of burglaries in the area this week.

Police said the Northford section of town, along Village Street, is being targeted.

"Several garages and sheds opened with some forced entry," Detective Ron Onofrio, of the North Branford Police Department, said.

Detectives said the thieves strike during the early morning hours and steal anything from power equipment and ATVs to dirt bikes.

Police are still investigating a dirt bike burglary that happened early Tuesday morning.

"I don't understand it, I don't know why. We've never had any trouble here before," Tony Esposito, a North Branford resident, said.

On Thursday, Onofrio explained why he thought the quiet community was being targeted.

"If you go and drive through that neighborhood, you see trails around the houses and it's apparent that there are dirt bikes and ATVs present, so I think anybody driving by knows that they are there," Onofrio said.

Police urge residents to install security cameras or motion sensors around their property.

They also asked residents to make sure their garages are locked and closed at all times.

"It used to be North Branford being a small town, we always use to leave our doors and windows open, but society has changed. We have to go back and really look at what we are doing," said Det. Onofrio.
