Connecticut's new higher education leader says none of the state's 12 community colleges will close, even in the face of budget cuts and a plan to revamp the way they are run.
Michael Meotti told trustees of the Connecticut Community Colleges system on Monday that state leaders recognize the schools' important missions. However, he could not promise that enrollment would always remain open to all applicants on its current first-come, first-served basis. He said enrollment might someday depend on economic constraints, incoming students' abilities and whether programs are available to help unprepared students catch up.
Meotti is interim president of the new Board of Regents for Higher Education, whose members are expected to be appointed in coming months. It will replace the boards running the community colleges and the Connecticut State University System.
