Power Alert Issued, Again

The city of Norwich issued a power alert on Thursday in response to the sweltering heat and another on Friday, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The alert, though, wasn't just about saving energy, it was mainly about saving money.

"New England will likely experience a peak energy day and that is a big component in how we buy power on an annual basis. If we can lower our system's peak, while at the same time New England sees its peak, we can save our customers some money," said John Bilda, the general manager of Norwich Public Utilities.

NPU suggests turning off the lights, using major appliances after 8 p.m., and washing dishes by hand during the day. The company is not asking anyone to turn off the air conditioning, because there's no threat to the power grid right now.

Officials from ISO New England said there's plenty of power to meet the heat wave demand.

It's a good thing too. Fans and air conditioning units have been flying off the shelves of hardware store.

Pfau's Hardware in West Hartford can hardly keep them in stock.

"Fans are almost non-existent. The  warehouses have even run out of them. People are just trying to get some kind of reprieve in the house," one employee said.
