Riding to Remember Murder Victim

Mitchell Dubey, an avid cyclist and musician, was gunned down one year ago.

It's been one year since Mitchell Dubey was shot and killed during a home invasion at his New Haven apartment.  His friends held a memorial bike ride in his honor Friday night.

Dubey, an avid cyclist and musician, was murdered during a brutal home invasion at his Bassett Street apartment on March 24, 2011.

The crime is still unsolved.

"He was a person I cared about tremendously," said Kyle Anthony, who was Dubey's friend and band mate.  "It's hard.  One day you have somebody in your life and the next day you don't."

To honor his memory, the Devil's Gear Bike Shop in New Haven organized a bike ride around downtown New Haven for those who knew Dubey.  He worked at the shop as a bike mechanic.

"Mitchell was a really great guy, had a lot of friends, a lot of family, a lot of people here in town that cared about him, and the tragedy of his death people are making sure no one forgets," said Matthew Feiner, the owner of the bike shop.

On the night of the crime, Dubey answered the door at his apartment and a man with a gun forced his way inside, according to his roommates.  He demanded Dubey and his roommates sit on the couch and empty their pockets.  Dubey was shot in the chest while trying to reason with the man.

"We were really overwhelmed by sadness and grief and now here we are a year later and we're able to spend some time celebrating what a wonderful person he was," said David Kahn, the general manager of the bike shop.

New Haven police continue investigating the crime.

"We're all hoping that something happens, that somebody talks, that some evidence is found, that somebody is brought to justice for this crime," said Feiner.
