Child Becomes Second Confirmed CT Swine Flu Case

A second case of swine flu has been confirmed in the state.

A child from Middlefield, who recently went on a family trip to Mexico, tested positive for the H1N1 Influenza virus, Governor Rell's office announced Saturday afternoon. Middlefield school officials will not say how old the child is, but there are only middle and elementary schools in town. The child did not attend classes this past week so they hope the exposure is minimal.

The results come one day after we learned an adult in Stratford tested positive as well. That person is recovering and was never hospitalized.

"It is important to remember that these cases involve people whose illness was relatively mild, since they are now feeling better and never needed hospitalization," said Gov. M. Jodi Rell.

The Department of Public Health Labratory has also identified six new probable cases, including five students at Fairfield University and a 15-year-old girl in Wethersfield who recently returned from a trip to Mexico. Two other students at Fairfield University and adults in Fairfield and Glastonbury have probable cases of the disease. All of those with confirmed or probable cases are recovering and no one has been hospitalized.

As of Friday, Fairfield University had not canceled any classes. Wethersfield students went back to class on Friday and all schools will be open again on Monday.  The town's mayor said on Saturday that the girl with the probable case does not attend Wethersfield public schools, she attends a private school in Connecticut.

Health officials are also waiting on the latest for a number of possible cases: an adult in Southbury, an adult in Vernon, a child in Waterbury, an adult in Glastonbury and a one more possible case in Stratford.
