Slain Newington Police Officer Remembered on 10th Anniversary of Shooting

Family, friends and colleagues are remembering a slain Newington police officer on the 10th anniversary of his death.

A private remembrance is planned Tuesday at the Newington Police Department at 10:20 p.m., the time Officer Peter Lavery was fatally shot on Dec. 30, 2004, while responding to a domestic violence call.

Police from surrounding towns also have been invited to the brief ceremony. Officials say Lavery's relatives plan to go to the cemetery where he is buried afterward.

Lavery was 47 years old and a 17-year veteran of the force when he was killed. Authorities say former prison guard Bruce Carrier opened fire on Lavery with an assault rifle as Lavery walked down the basement stairs of a home.

Carrier later killed himself during a 19-hour standoff with police.
