Crews put out fires at 2 unoccupied houses on sub base in Groton

NBC Universal, Inc.

Firefighters put out fires in two buildings at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton Friday morning.

A watchstander on base reported a fire in the unoccupied housing area of Cavalla Court around 5:30 a.m. Friday and the SUBASE Fire Department responded to find 46 and 52 Cavalla Court, two unoccupied, adjacent structures, on fire, according to SUBASE New London.

The fires were extinguished just after 6 a.m.

Both structures have extensive damage.

SUBASE New London said the area of five small single-family, ranch-style homes built in 1961, has been unoccupied for several years.

The sub base said the housing area is part of PPV, privatized housing in the Navy, with Balfour Beatty’s Beacon Point Homes managing.

“The quick reaction of base watch standers and rapid response of our Fire Department and mutual aid responders allowed us to limit additional spread, extinguish the structure fires, and ensure no impact to our base mission,”  Captain Kenneth M. Curtin Jr., Commanding Officer, Naval Submarine Base New London, said in a statement.

No firefighters were injured and there was no impact on the sub base mission, according to a public affairs official

The sub base is investigating the cause of the fires.
