A construction crew hit a gas line on Main Street in Hartford around 11:15 a.m. Monday, according to police.
The ruptured gas line could be seen spewing gas into the air at one point.
Several buildings in the area of Main Street and Pearl Street were evacuated as a precaution, according to the mayor's office.
The leak has been contained and several streets in the area have reopened, according to Hartford police.

Fire officials said CNG will remain at the scene, working on getting everything restored.
They said readings were taken of all the buildings affected and were all deemed safe for reentry. The Travelers property was evacuated but everyone was allowed back in.
CNG has completely shut off the gas to the building at 777 Main St., which houses 650 residents but everyone is being allowed to reoccupy the property, fire officials said.

Employees at the Gold building at 755 Main St. are also being allowed back in, according to the fire department.
Only Pearl Street remained closed between Main Street and Trumbull Street by 2 p.m., police said.
