A family escaped an early morning fire in New Haven on Thursday.
Firefighters responded to 704 Winchester Avenue just before 6 a.m. The fire broke out on the first floor of the multi-family home and spread to a house next door, according to fire officials.
Two adults and six children were home at the time of the fire. Firefighters initially searched the house, fearing some of the children were still trapped inside, but all were able to get out on their own.
The upper floors of the house were not occupied, fire officials said.
The home was heavily damaged. The family will have to find somewhere else to stay.
