Police have identified the man who died after a crash in Hartford early Sunday morning.

Officers responded to Locust Street around 2 a.m. after getting a report of a serious crash.

When police arrived, they said they found a black 1999 Honda Civic had run off the side of the road and hit a tree.

According to police, the driver of the vehicle, later identified as 25-year-old Carlos Rivas, Jr., was found unresponsive inside of the vehicle. He was later pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, authorities added.

Investigators said they believe the vehicle was traveling southbound on Locust Street at a high rate of speed when it hit the curb, lost control, crossed over to the other side of the road and hit an embankment and then a tree.

Officers said they believe Rivas was killed instantly. He was the only person in the car at the time of the crash.

Authorities said it appears as though excessive speed was the contributing factor to this crash.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Eric Lemke of the Hartford Police Crime Scene Division or the HPD Tip Line at (860) 722-8477.
