Firefighter suffered second-degree burns fighting fire in Hamden

NBC Connecticut

A firefighter suffered second-degree burns while battling a fire in Hamden on Friday and a resident was treated for smoke inhalation, according to the fire department.

Firefighters responded to a home on Wintergreen Avenue around 8:38 a.m. and found smoke coming from the eaves.

They were able to evacuate a resident and three small dogs.

Firefighters were battling high heat, heavy smoke and fire on the second floor and called for a second alarm.

Crews contained the fire to the two bedrooms on the second floor.

While investigating, several extension cords and power strips were found in the bedroom and some were running under carpets and padding, according to the fire department.

The Hamden Fire Department said extension cords should only be used on a temporary basis.

They said multiple cords should not be plugged into each other and they should not run under carpets or doorways.

They also urge people to inspect cords before use and discard any damaged ones.

Mutual aid responded from fire departments from neighboring towns.

The Hamden Community Emergency Response Team and the American Red Cross helped the homeowner as well as to the firefighters operating in challenging and frigid conditions.
