NBC Universal, Inc.

Police are investigating after a man was found dead in the passenger seat of a stolen vehicle in Hartford with a gunshot wound on Wednesday morning.

Officers received a call about an unresponsive man at the intersection of Canton Street and Donald Street around 1:49 a.m.

When police arrived, they said they found a man in his 20s hanging out of a vehicle with a gunshot wound.

The man, later identified as 23-year-old Jose Rodriguez, of Manchester, was unconscious at the scene and was later pronounced dead, according to investigators.

Authorities said the vehicle Rodriguez was found in was determined to be stolen. It's unclear how long the vehicle was there.

Police said the passenger side door of the vehicle was open and Rodriguez was hanging out of it. It is believed he was in the car with someone else driving.

Investigators do not believe the crime happened where Rodriguez was found.

Officers said the shooting was clearly targeted. The investigation remains active and is ongoing.

Wednesday's shooting marks Hartford's 39th homicide this year.
