Ten families are displaced after a fire in Brookfield early Thursday morning.

Firefighters responded to Boxwood Drive in the Ledgewood Condominium Complex around 1:30 a.m. and battled the two-alarm fire that damaged 10 units and displaced 10 families.

Assistant Fire Chief Derek Broadmeyer said the fire started in one unit and spread to others and Fire Chief Andrew Ellis said the fire was difficult to stop because there were no fire-stops in the attic.

Residents were evacuated and a police officer and a civilian were taken to the hospital to be evaluated. The police officer has since been released.

There has been no update on the other person who was taken to the hospital, but fire officials said there were no major injuries.

Several agencies provided assistance to Brookfield crews as they worked to put the fire out.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

The displaced residents were taken to a senior center as crews battled the blaze. The Red Cross is helping them.
