Police release identities of couple killed in Thanksgiving crash in Bristol

NBC Connecticut

Police have released the identities of a couple killed in a crash on Thanksgiving night in Bristol.

Toby Cohen, 41, and Brooke Cohen, 37, of Scarsdale, New York were killed when their car went off Stevens Street and went into the woods, crashing into trees around 7:15 p.m. Thursday, according to police.

Investigators said the car was traveling on Morea Road in Farmington and crashed just after crossing the Bristol town line on Stevens Street near Cherry Hill Drive.

The couple was pronounced dead at the scene. Their three children, aged between 2 years old and 6 years old, were also in the car, police said. All three children were in car seats and were taken to the hospital. One child was flown by LifeStar helicopter, according to police.

The children remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition, police said. Investigators did not release the names of the children due to their ages.

The family was in the area visiting for Thanksgiving, police said.

"This is a gut wrenching story and my sincere condolences are extended to the family. My heart sinks for those poor children and hope they have family support in New York," Bristol Mayor Jeff Caggiano said.

Brooke Cohen worked for more than 10 years for the Brooklyn, New York, District Attorney's office, working in the Domestic Violence Bureau, a spokesperson confirmed to NBC Connecticut Monday. She left the job last summer, he said.

District Attorney Eric Gonzalez sent a memo to his staff about the tragedy.

“The profound loss of our dear friend and longtime colleague Brooke Cohen, and her husband Toby, leaves a void not only in our professional community but deeply affects each one of us who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside them," the memo read. "Throughout her time in Brooklyn, Brooke demonstrated unwavering dedication, relentless advocacy, and a steadfast commitment to combatting gender-based violence. From her early days as an assistant to her role as a supervisor in the criminal court, she fought for justice with positivity, resilience, and a contagious smile that inspired those around her."
