NBC Universal, Inc.

A suspect in an armed home invasion that prompted a Manchester school and area residents to shelter in place was found in Windham, according to state police. They said he had self-inflicted gunshot wounds and died at the scene after a chase.

Bowers Elementary School was in secure mode Tuesday afternoon and residents in the area were urged to stay inside as police searched for 46-year-old Rye Shashok.

Officers searched the area of 197 Oakland St. for Shashok and he was found several hours later in Windham, according to police.

Police said they were called to the area at about 2:10 p.m. after a man entered a home and held the occupant against their will. The owner returned home and saw what was happening. She then fled and the suspect chased after her, but she hid in a neighbor's home, according to authorities.

According to police, Shashok knew the victims. Authorities said he allegedly stole a car in New Jersey Tuesday morning and drove it to Connecticut. The car is a silver 2011 Acura TL with NJ license plate E77NKX. Officers say there's damage to the driver's side door.
