Boil Water Advisory Lifted in Torrington

UPDATE: The Torrington Water Company has lifted the precautionary boil water advisory.

The Torrington Water Company previously found the water main leak in the west side of the town Sunday, near the corner of Roberts Street and Lynn Heights Road.

The break caused most of the west side of town to be out of water. At least 3,000 customers were affected, including the Litchfield Woods Nursing Home, public health officials added.

The Torrington Area Health District said a notification was sent to affected residents and businesses about a precautionary boil water advisory.

Residents who were in other areas served by the Torrington Water Company were not affected and did not need to boil their water, the health district added.

The Torrington Water Company said water samples submitted to a lab for bacteriological testing came back absent of contaminants.

Although customers in the West Side service zone who were affected by the main break no longer need to boil their water, there are steps that people should take before using their water again.

For General Household Maintenance:

  • Unscrew and remove the faucet aerator (screen)
  • Turn on each cold water faucet/tap slowly
  • Run cold water for five minutes
  • Clean after water is flushed with water and dish soap and reinstall aerator
  • Clean with vinegar if any solid debris is noticed in the aerator
  • To flush automatic ice makers, make three batches of ice and discard.
  • Run water softeners through a regeneration cycle.  Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines specified in the owner’s manual
  • Change refrigerator filters

To clear hot water pipes and water heater of untreated water:

Run hot water only at all faucets and flush until water runs cool or typically for a minimum of 15 minutes. Hot water is then safe to use for hand washing of dishes, pots and pans, etc.
