A standoff that began when police attempted to serve a warrant to a homicide suspect Tuesday in northwest Dallas ended with the man taken to a Dallas hospital.
Members of the North Texas Fugitive Task Force were serving a warrant at about 4:30 p.m. at the Walnut Inn, on the 2600 block of Walnut Hill Lane. As they approached the suspect's room, the officers heard gunshots fired from inside the room, police said.
The officers retreated and called for SWAT units to respond, police said.
Nobody was injured by the gunfire.
Police blocked traffic from traveling along Walnut Hill Lane at Shady Trail as a precaution while they attempted to communicate with the man inside.
Officers fired tear gas inside the man's motel room just before 7:30 p.m., and he soon surrendered. He was taken to a hospital for treatment from exposure to the tear gas and did not appear to be shot, police said.
The suspect was identified as Benjamin Strauch, 27.
Fort Worth police said he was wanted in connection with a homicide on May 30 in the 2200 block of Evans Avenue.
