Venezuela Could Release 40% of Prisoners

Venezuela’s first minister for prisons says the country could release 40 percent of its inmates in an attempt to lessen overcrowding. Iris Varela's announcement came one month after more than two dozen people died in clashes in a prison near the capital. There have been numerous riots in Venezuelan prisons this year. Varela said that of “Venezuela's 50,000 inmates, 20,000 shouldn't be in jail,” those who have committed minor crimes. But she promised “we won't let the wolves loose.”
