Randy Who? UConn Looks for New Coach

UConn has already begun its search for a new head football coach, athletic director Jeff Hathaway said in a news conference in Storrs Tuesday.

The University is looking to replace Randy Edsall, who was hired Sunday to take over the program at the University of Maryland.

Hathaway was joined by interim head coach Hank Hughes, who told the media he is interested in becoming the new UConn head coach.

"The search began Saturday night and will continue full go," Hathaway said. "We are working virtually around the clock on this search and it is our top priority. We will be quick, but not hurry and we will be diligent but also cognizant of the recruiting period and the need to put permanent leadership in place."

Hathaway said he first learned of Edsall's intentions after getting a text message from Edsall Saturday night just minutes after the Huskies' loss to the Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl.

"Following the text, I talked to Randy and he indicated to me his intentions to interview at the University of Maryland, and subsequently Sunday morning at 5:25 the athletic director at the University of Maryland reached out to me," Hathaway said.

The only other time Hathaway says he spoke to Edsall was Sunday evening when Edsall called to tell him he had taken the Maryland job.

The university has hired a Massachusetts firm to help in the search process. In the meantime, Hathaway says Hughes has his full confidence.
