UConn Rookie One of Country's Best

UConn's Kelly Faris named to national 19-and-under team

Kelly Faris, a soon-to-be Husky, is one of the country’s best hoop-playing teens. The incoming UConn freshman has been named to the under 19 national team that will compete in the World Championships in Thailand.

The team trains for the next week at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., before heading to Bangkok for the tournament, scheduled to begin July 23.

Faris, a 5-11 guard from Indianapolis, will be the only freshman joining the championship team next season. Her international hoot duties, however, won’t keep her from her classes. She'll be back in Storrs in time for fall semester Aug. 31.

Faris isn't the only UConn player getting international experience this summer.

Center Tina Charles, guard Tiffany Hayes and forward Maya Moore are all on the USA team competing at the World University Games in Serbia. Moore has had to sit on the bench, however, after suffering a knee sprain in an exhibition game.

Coach Geno Auriemma is leading the U.S. women’s Olympic team in London in 2012.
