Wesleyan Student Found Burned Dies

A Wesleyan student who was found burned on Monday died on Monday afternoon, school officials said.

Nora Miller, a member of the class of 2012, was found on the athletic fields on Monday morning, suffering burns to 100 percent of her body.

A statement from Michael Roth, president of Wesleyan, said Miller’s death was a suicide.

“It is with great sorrow that I inform you that, a Wesleyan student from the class of 2012, died late Monday afternoon,” he said in a statement.

Emergency crews found Nora in an athletic field and she was airlifted from campus to Hartford Hospital and then transported to Bridgeport Hospital Burn Center.

Nora studied film and he said she had great talent and energy and was an “athlete of distinction, an engaged contributor to our community, a devoted friend and a loving daughter and sister.”

In March 2009, she spent the first weekend of her spring break speaking with underprivileged girls about the importance of staying in school and pursuing higher education, according to a news release on the school's Web site

Her parents are former Wesleyan employees, Roth said.

”Our hearts go out to Nora’s family and friends in this terribly painful moment. When someone takes her own life, the entire community is shaken. I have no doubt we will be more mindful than ever of those who are suffering around us, and, I trust, we will console one another and take care of one another,” Roth said.

Student affairs staff members have been providing support to some of Nora’s friends. I encourage anyone who is seeking help to speak to the Office of Behavioral Health for Students (always available via the 24-hour on-call system 860-685-2910) or to one of our class deans.
