State: Clear Off Your Roof, There's More Snow Coming

Less than a week after a Nor'easter left parts of Connecticut under 2 feet of snow, the state is being hit again. A mix of snow, ice and rain has begun to fall, creating headaches, not only on the roads, but also at homes.

One major concern is for flat roofs to collapse or buckle."The concern we have here is the weight of the present snow on the roof, then anticipated rain coming on top of that roof," said Battalion Chief Paul Schroeder, of the Norwich Fire Department, said.

Last week, the Norwich Fire Department was called out to 92 Washington St., where the snow and ice caused an apartment building to partially collapse. With an example like that, the state is urging homeowners to clear off any flat surfaces and brush off piled up snow before it becomes heavier with this new storm.

"Just get out there and do the work. You've got to get out there and shovel, clear the path the best you can," Apache Mercado, of Norwich, said.

During the storm, the fire department said, people should call for help.

"If people notice any cracking, bowing or unusual noises in their roof or attic area, call us," Schroeder said.

The fire department will also have crews out on the roads, clearing out any storm drains that might be packed with ice to prevent possible flooding. CL&P and United Illuminating will also have crews out in preparation of the ice binding to power lines.

Crews started around midnight and additional operation folks began about 5 a.m., said Michael West, Director of Corporate Communications for U.I.

If a power line is down by your home, U.I. wants to hear about it.

"The more we can get reports, and with more specificity with what they might see, it helps us with restoration efforts," said West.
