Drunk Man Endangers Child on Trip for Donuts: Cops

Wolcott police arrested a man who they said was drunk and on methadone while begging for donut money outside a convenience store last night with a 3-year-old girl.

Police received a 911 call at 7:29 p.m. from someone who was concerned about a man who appeared to be drunk begging for money with a small child at the Cumberland Farms Store at 1655 Meriden Road.

When Officer Chris Charette responded, the man was gone, but the officer saw him walking on Meriden Road, about to cross the busy road with a little girl.

Charette stopped the man, who has been identified as Thomas Borucki, 28, of Waterbury, and noticed that smelled of alcohol. He was also slurring words and was unsteady on his feet, police said.

Borucki told Charette that he was on methadone because of heroin use, had been drinking alcohol during the day and was taking his girlfriend’s daughter for donuts, police said.

Borucki lives with his girlfriend and her 3-year-old daughter started crying while her mother was taking a nap, so Borucki decided to take her for a donut, he told police.

However, he did not have money, so he was asking strangers at the gas station for some.

Police noted that Borucki had two Dunkin Donuts bags with him.

When police spoke with the little girl’s mother, she said Borucki was supposed to be taking the child to a park in the apartment complex and should not have been on Meriden Road with her.

The mother took the girl home and Borucki was brought to the police department.

Police said Borucki has been arrested 12 other times since 2002.

He was charged with breach of peace and risk of injury to a minor in the latest case and did not make $25,000 bond.

He was transported to court this morning and police said they reached out to the state Department of Children and Families.
