Badly Behaving Cop in Hot Water With NHPD

Cops: Fellow officer faces charges after bar blowup

A New Haven police officer is under investigation by his own department over some alleged bad and unsanitary behavior at a local bar in October, on a night he supposedly called out sick from duty.

On Oct. 30, Jason Bandy, 24, was at the Center Street Lounge at 84 Orange St. after closing time and waved his badge at a club bouncer who was attempting to throw him out, the New Haven Register reports, citing police and witness accounts.

He also urinated on a bathroom floor near a urinal and swore and told the woman cleaning it to shut up, the Register reports.

When an extra-duty police officer working at the bar confronted him, Bandy refused to answer his questions and at first denied he was a police officer, the Register reports.

Bandy, who has been a police officer for about a year, was charged Tuesday with breach of peace, interfering with police and disorderly conduct.  He was released on a promise to appear in court Dec. 10.

"The New Haven Police Department takes any incident involving possible misconduct by an officer very seriously as we expect officers to serve as role models to the community," Chief James Lewis said in a statement.

The statement also said the department's Internal Affairs division is investigating the incident.  Bandy is currently on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
