Teachers, Students Prepare to Return to School in Hartford

Classes resume at schools across the state this week and teachers in Hartford are pulling out all the stops to get ready for the new school year.

“I’m ready,” said Mario Marrero, Hartford’s 2013 Teacher of the Year, who joined hundreds of teachers on Monday morning at Weaver High School for Convocation 2013.

The event is aimed at getting teachers in Hartford pumped for the first day of school tomorrow.

“I’m actually looking forward to starting school tomorrow. … I miss my kids,” Marrero said.

Students were also excited about returning to class.

“It’s a new year and new friends are coming. High school is just around the corner,” Yasley Rivera said.

“It’s good to be back in school, back into the swing of things,” said 8th grader Dymond Smith.

Hartford Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto said that while students have been on break, teachers have been hard at work all summer, getting ready for the next school year.

“We’re preparing future leaders. These students are going to enter the workforce. They’re going to be our future leaders, leading organizations, taking our place,” Kishimoto said.
