Fire Damages Building Under Renovation in New London

NBC Universal, Inc.

A fire heavily damaged a building on Bank Street in New London Wednesday.

The two-alarm fire was reported around 11:30 a.m.

Firefighters from New London and several surrounding towns responded to help fight the blaze.

The building was under renovation and was being turned into apartment buildings, according to fire officials.

Five workers were inside the building when the fire broke out. All of them were able to get out of the burning building safely, fire officials said.

A restaurant and an apartment building next door were evacuated as a precaution but firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to other structures.

Fire officials said there were propane tanks in the building, but it is too early to determine what caused the fire.

Bank Street was expected to be closed for several hours.
