Man Fired Gun in Apartment with 7 Children Inside: Hartford Police

Hartford police have arrested a Wethersfield man accused of firing a gun in an apartment with seven children inside.

Police said on Tuesday around 6 p.m. the suspect, identified as Yamil Rohena, knocked on the door of an apartment at 283 Wethersfield Avenue and began arguing with someone inside. When a relative of that person intervened, Rohena pulled a gun and shot the relative.

According to police, the victim and Rohena began to struggle and fell through the door of a neighboring apartment. Rohena continued to fire his gun but did not strike anyone.

At the time of the incident, there were seven young children inside the apartment, police said.

The victim eventually disarmed Rohena and was able to hold Rohena until officers arrived. No one in the neighboring apartment was injured. The victim suffered one gunshot wound to his right bicep and was taken to Hartford Hospital for treatment. He is listed in stable condition, police said. He has not been identified.

Police recovered the weapon, an S&W M&P 9mm handgun, on scene. Shooting task force detectives also found shell casings, projectiles and damage consistent with gunfire on the rear porch and kitchen area of the apartment.

Police said Rohena is a convicted felon and was listed as currently on supervised patrol for a serious assault in 2014.

Rohena was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, unlawful discharge of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a firearm, pistol without a permit, possession of a high capacity magazine and risk of injury.
