Dust off those old running shoes and gather the kids together for the first ever 5K race during the NBC Connecticut Health and Wellness Festival.
Sometimes a good trainer is all it takes to get on track to a healthier you. Starting out won’t always be easy, but your body will thank you for it.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean a structured exercise program but just increasing your daily activity,” Bud Gouveia, the director of the Fitness Center at St. Francis Hospital, said.
At least 30 minutes is all you need to improve your overall health, whether you run or walk in the park and enjoy the scenery as the leaves begin to change colors.
“Before I went to work, I would do nine miles on the bike,” said Hyla Sklar, a Hartford resident who leads an active lifestyle. “I like when my blouse is a little looser than it was last year.”
She is diligent about using the fitness center at St. Francis and said she turns to people like Bud Gouveia for guidance.
“We’re trying to head off the effects of aging and disease by getting people more active through exercise,” he said.

St. Francis is sponsoring the 5K race at this year’s Health and Wellness Festival and they want to get the entire family involved, including children.
“No pressure, no competition per se, but just to get out and get some fresh air and a little bit of exercise along the way,” said Gouveia.
The race will be run on Sunday, October 18 at 9 a.m. at the XL Center. Click here for more information.
