Governor to Release Numbers on Layoffs

Gov. Dannel Malloy's office is expected to release more information on Wednesday about how many state workers have received layoff notices.

The governor is laying off about 6,500 people after unions rejected the deal last month that would have cut $1.6 billion from the budget.

“It's difficult. I mean, you're unsure of what's going on, but you do the best you can and that's all you can do,” Joe DiPietro, of New Britain, said.

Among those who already received notice are state Department of Corrections workers.

The union representing them warns that cutting prison jobs and closing facilities will lead for disaster, despite a declining inmate population.

“They're looking for every nook and cranny that they have (to) just cram the inmates in there, which is making it a very unsafe condition,” Luke Leone, AFSCME Local 1565 said.

“You don't keep prisons open to maintain excess capacity. Otherwise, you're paying bills you don't have to pay. We want a prison system that matches the requirements of the criminal justice system,” Malloy said.

As layoff notices continue to go out, Malloy has given unions until September to come up with their own cost savings plan.

Malloy will present his proposal for budget cuts to legislators on Friday.
