5 to Watch: Olympians Say Goodbye to Rio

CLOSING CEREMONY

The first Olympics in South America came to an end at Maracanã Stadium for the Closing Ceremony. The Mayor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike, received the Olympic flag, symbolizing the conclusion of the Rio Olympics and the start to the 2020 Summer Games. 

American gymnast Simone Biles serves as the U.S. flag bearer during the closing ceremony.

US MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM GRABS GOLD

The U.S. men’s basketball team had to answer questions about being a disappointment in Olympic competition, but bested Serbia in the gold medal showdown, 96 TO 66.

US VOLLEYBALL MEN GRAB BRONZE

A little less than 48 hours removed from a shocking loss to Italy in the semifinals, a young American team rebounded to take the bronze from the Russian squad.

The game was tied at two sets each and went into a fifth set where the US beat out Russia 15-13 in a final 20 minute set.

CLARESSA SHIELDS FIGHTS FOR BACK-TO-BACK OLYMPIC GOLD

Claressa Shields became the first American boxer to win two Olympic boxing gold medals. "I wanted to let everyone to know that I'm not just a great female boxer, but I'm one of the great boxers that ever lived," Shields proclaimed.

The reigning Olympic gold medalist in the women’s middleweight division ran through her competition in Rio.

MEN’S MARATHON

Guor Marial, 32, may not have reached the podium but he was still one to watch. South Sudan's flag bearer is competing in his second Olympics but for the first time representing his country, which gained independence in 2011. Marial reportedly lost 28 members of his family during Sudan's civil war and escaped slavery before being taken into the U.S. as a refugee.

Marial finished 82 with a time of 2:22:45, which was his seasonal best.

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge has captured the gold medal in men’s marathon. Ethiopia's Feyisa Lilesa got silver and United States' Galen Rupp won a bronze medal.
