One Dead in Officer-Involved Shooting

There was an altercation when police stopped a car in Hartford, police said.

One person is dead and another was injured in a police-involved shooting in Hartford early Wednesday morning.

Investigators said four Hartford police officers noticed three men crouching down behind a stolen car.

First they refused to comply when officers asked them to show their hands, police said, then they drove at the police and one Hartford police officer drew his service weapon and fired.

Second later, the driver lost control and crashed into the Casas Verdes Apartments on Wadsworth Street, police said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The couple who lives inside the apartment was sleeping on the second floor and was not hurt. The American Red Cross is three adults and two children from two families after the crash.

A second person inside the vehicle was injured by gunfire, police said. Detectives are interviewing the third person who was in the car.

The investigation has been turned over to the Connecticut State Police, who responded to the scene.

Antonio Vargas, of Springfield, grew up in the complex and said it's not usually a spot for crime.

"This was never like this. It was never like this before," he said.

He received a frantic phone call from his mother around 1 a.m.

"She heard tires squeaking, people screaming and all of a sudden she heard mad shots, over and over, and over," he said.

The three officers involved will be on administrative duty as the investigation is conducted, which is protocol with fatal shootings.
