Hartford police are investigating the city's 21st homicide of the year.

A 39-year-old man was shot once in the chest on Thursday night near the intersection of South Marshall and Case streets in Hartford's west end, police said.

He was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead just before 10:30 p.m., according to Hartford police Sgt. Glendaly Garcia.

A witness at the scene said she heard one gunshot and saw a car speed off moments later.

The Hartford Police Major Crimes Division is investigating the homicide.

Police have not released the name of the victim.
