State Up to 25 Cases of Swine Flu

There are 25 confirmed cases of H1N1 flu, or swine flu, in the state.

On Saturday, Gov. M. Jodi Rell said the Department of Public Health had confirmed another 11 Connecticut residents had tested positive for novel swine flu.

The new cases are in Ridgefield, Danbury, Darien, Derby, Greenwich, Old Saybrook, Waterbury and Wilton. Four more probable cases still being tested.

On Friday, Rell said six Fairfield residents, as well as residents of North Granby, Wethersfield and Glastonbury, had the virus.  A case was also received from the Public Health Laboratory in Massachusetts, which conducted the confirmation test on a Manchester resident who was treated in that state.

When the pandemic struck in United States, only the federal Centers for Disease Control could confirm if a case was the H1N1 flu, but now the state can do the testing.

“We continue to expect new cases, and now our own state laboratory is able to do the testing so we do not have to wait for responses from the federal Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta," Rell said. "Happily, the cases we have seen continue to be relatively mild and people are recovering without needing to spend time in a hospital."

Of the 25 confirmed cases and four probable cases still being tested, the ages of the people affected range from 4 to 56.

Of them, 16 are female and 13 are male. In Fairfield, 18 people are affected. In Hartford, there are five cases. In New Haven, there are three cases. In New London, there are two and there is one case in Middlesex.

Staff from the state Department of Public Health has contacted 23 of the 29 people. All of those individuals are recovering or have recovered and none required hospitalization. DPH epidemiologists are still in the process of contacting the remaining six individuals.

"The Department of Public Health will continue to monitor for additional cases," Rell said. "We continue to encourage people to take simple, common-sense precautions to protect themselves and prevent the spread of the flu. People with flu-like symptoms should call their doctor."
