Water Main Breaks Twice, Leaving a Vernon Road Closed for Most of the Day

Crews thought they had it under control, but a temperamental water main just wouldn't stay put.

The six-inch water main on East Main Street in Vernon ruptured for the first time Wednesday night. The break caused water to rush down the hill and created an icy situation on the roadway.

"Looked like a flood going down our street. I was like 'oh, it's really cold out there. I would hate to be them working down there,'" said Jessica Sosa of Rockville.

Crews from the Connecticut Water Company battled the cold and shut down East Main Street from Cottage to Court Street while they repaired the break.

They wrapped up work in the late morning hours Thursday, only to have the water main break for a second time around 2 p.m.

"Come home today, still no water, can't get in the driveway or anything, had to park the car down here and walk up there," said Mike Gorton of Vernon.

Around 10 p.m. Thursday, crews were still out trying to repair the water main. They anticipated being out on East Main Street for most of the night. During that time, about 40 people will remain without water. Some found it elsewhere.

"Went down and got some water down there at the store, just to have for brushing my teeth and to drink," said Gorton.
