NBC Universal, Inc.

A 70-year-old woman was seriously injured after crashing into a Torrington salon with people inside Wednesday evening.

Torrington Police said the accident happened at H & Company on New Litchfield Street, or Route 202, at about 3:15 p.m.

Officers said they found a car that had been traveling south on Litchfield Street when it drove through the intersection and struck the left side of the salon.

The car continued through the building and ultimately stopped in the rear parking lot, according to police.

The building sustained heavy damage but was deemed structurally safe. Authorities said there was an employee and client inside the salon at the time of the crash, but neither of them was injured.

A 70-year-old Torrington woman was taken to Hartford Hospital by Lifestar and is being treated for serious injuries at this time, according to police. As of Thursday morning, she was in serious but stable condition.

Dina Julian was supposed to meet her brother who lives in the building. Julian said her brother went to pick up his child minutes before and wasn’t home when the crash happened.

She said it’s scary to think about the timing.

“My brother could have been out there, my nephew or me right in the driveway there,” she said.

Julian said she’s glad no one else was hurt.

“Thank God nobody was in the parking lot at that moment,” she said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation, but police said the preliminary investigation indicates that neither drugs nor alcohol contributed to the crash.

New Litchfield Street was closed in the area of Litchfield Street but has since reopened.
