A North Haven woman and her son have been arrested in the stabbing death of a North Haven bartender early Monday morning.

The bartender, Christopher Hall, 47, had been stabbed once in the chest inside Doran's Bar at 80 Old Broadway.

Mary Ames, 47, is accused of stabbing Hall during an altercation. She and her son, Michael Ames, 24, were at the bar as patrons when the stabbing happened.

A 911 call reporting the stabbing was made just before 1 a.m. The bartender was gravely injured when emergency workers arrived and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told investigators that Mary Ames fled after the altercation. She has a criminal history and brought the knife to the bar, police said. She was charged with murder and is being held on $1 million bond.

Michael Ames is accused of driving the getaway car and was also arrested. Ames, who lives with his mother, was charged with hindering prosecution. His bond was set at $100,000.

The State Police major crime squad and North Haven police are investigating.

Police have not yet released the name of the suspect or victim.
