Town officials in North Branford have been receiving anonymous attack letters since December.

They started after an internal police department suit was addressed at a Board of Police Commissioners’ meeting, the New Haven Register reports.

The letters are signed “The Truth Shall Prevail” and make claims about criminal behavior, the Register reports. Now, the town attorney and the  state's attorney's office have been asked to investigate.

The Town Council warned on Tuesday that the notes have been and will continue to be, turned over to the town attorney and then to the state’s attorney’s office if criminal allegations are made.

Letters that have been forwarded to town officials target Police Chief Matthew Canelli, Deputy Chief Michael Doody and even a private resident, sources told the paper.

Council members did not discuss the statement or letters further.
