The smokiing cessation programs have begun at Groton base.

The Navy will soon begin banning smoking under water and the Groton submarine base is getting sailors ready.

Navy officials started smoking cessation programs and have removed smoking areas from the submarines based there, in advance of a smoking ban that goes into effect onboard submarines by  Dec. 31.

A study in 2009 found that non-moking submarine sailors were testing positive for nicotine exposure, despite smoking being confined to certain areas.

In addition to smoking cessation programs, the Navy will also offer nicotine patches and gum to sailors.
