In a matter of two days, two children fell out of windows to their deaths in very similar circumstances.

The first fatal fall happened on Friday afternoon in West Haven when, police say, a 2-year-old boy fell out of a second story window. A family member took him to the hospital, where he died.

Police believe he too pushed out the window screen before falling.

The second fall happened on Saturday around 8 p.m. at the Woodcliff Estates apartment complex in East Hartford. That’s when another 2-year-old boy pushed off the window screen and fell three stories to his death, police said.

"Oh my God! I can’t believe that,” neighbor Julio Ocasio said after learning about the death at Woodcliff Estates.

Neighbors say the windows can be dangerous and that residents often put children’s beds against the windows.

“They’re not tight,” Deb Chanda said. “I got a baby. I have to keep a close watch when the baby stands near the window.”

Police are still investigating both incidents.

The best was to prevent falls, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is to install window guards.
